SOCIAL NETWORK RAGE!

So this morning I was checking out what everyone was up to in their lives via facebook. It always makes me chuckle when people rage out on FB or twitter. It happens all the time. Social networks have made it super easy for everyone to lash out at someone or group of people, complain about the smallest of events, and do all this in under a minute after it happens.

I guess the question we need to ask is how valid are these fits of rage? There was some social rage in the Book of John …

[3] The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst [4] they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. [5] Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” [6] This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. [7] And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” [8] And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. [9] But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. (John 8:3-9 ESV)

In this piece of scripture a group brings a woman that had just messed up, but look at the first part of verse 6 again. Was it really about the woman at all or about their own agenda? On any other day would they have brought this woman out to a crowd to shame her if they weren’t trying to get Jesus to do something to charge against him? In the end everyone walks away. Jesus made them look at their own lives.

No one is perfect, Jesus was and is. I’m not, that annoying old lady driving 10 under in front of you is not, the kid on his cell phone thinking they need to be heard by everyone is not, and you’re not either. Next time you feel the urge to rage about how dumb someone else is, take a deep breath and remember we’re not perfect either. Some things people do are rude, inconsiderate, and may be dumb. But allow me to end with this …

[29] Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. [30] And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [31] Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. [32] Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:29-32 ESV)

You’ll all notice that I’ve removed the Israel Study Tour fundraising/support letter from my page and the Facebook page is no longer in existence either. Over the last couple of months there has been a lot of new adventures starting up in my life and some others that feel like you stepped on the wrong stone of the floor that falls out from under you if you do that. (Indiana Jones reference). Also there was a lot of vocal support saying how great of an opportunity it was, but less than as money fiscal supports. All that to say, between those two current on goings it didn’t seem to be in the cards. For those of you that sent some support, we’ll be in touch. For those that offered well wishes or maybe even took time to pray for everything, I appreciate it.

Israel Study Trip Update

Hey everyone! Here we are in a new week and things are moving along!! There has been a great amount of positive feedback and people saying they’ll pray for this trip and that is GREATLY appreciated!

An update on how needs are being met. I started an event page on FB and it was sent to 506 people. Some have asked me to be more specific with details, so here they are.

1. I will be going to study in Israel for 11 days during April 2011.
2. $5,200. must be raised to make this happen.
3. This was sent to 506 people. That breaks down to $10.28 from each person … that’s it. That’s $1.72 a month for the next 6 months. That is if EVERYONE was willing to help out. Some will not. I’d ask you to really pray about helping out. If you can help more of course that’s awesome.

so march 31st, 2010 will go down as one of my worst days ever … maybe. It all started when my sub conscious decided my alarm wasn’t valid and made my body shut it off, so while getting an extra 1.5 hours of sleep was nice, waking up in a panic was not … this set the tone for the rest of the day. Running constantly from the time I got up until I got home this evening the day was filled with many … shall we say “unfun” things. Seems like everyone had somewhere else to be that helps out with our WiRED student service, so it put set up, media, and some other things behind a bit. After spending a fair amount of time setting up mediashout for our projector that night I was informed that the bulb had blown out on sunday, so there was no point in that. Still feeling super stressed at this point. Students start arriving around 6pm for the service and things were alright. Called in some favors and people really came through making sure even with last minute people missing everything happened. A bit before service I had to ask myself if it was my own pride that was stressing me out or was I being taught a lesson that sometimes God wants us to be uncomfortable. Since it’s His service anyways. That’s something Perry Noble brought up at UNLEASH conference about a month ago. ”What if God wants you to be ticked off?” We get in our groove were everything is going amazing and that’s when our pride sneaks in and makes us believe we actually had a part in it … ”I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” - romans 7:18.

Sometimes it takes a swift kick in the rear as a reminder that we’re worthless on our own and it’s not about anything we do. Don’t get me wrong, we’re more valuable than all the riches in this world as God’s children, but that’s still not about us. It’s about His glory, not ours. If today wasn’t “unfun” enough, on the way home there were 2 dogs running down the middle of a dark road, I couldn’t miss them both and hit one of them … turned around to see it dragging itself into the ditch. I had to call his owner and tell them their dog Max would be dead soon. Sometimes we let good things take us over. Does God want good things for us? Absolutely, not even good things, but great things if we’re yearning for Him. There’s a fine line though between living for His glory and playing a great role to make people think we’re not the leading actor we so want to be. Max died shortly after his owner arrived, he laid in that ditch knowing he was dying.

Tonight we talked about Stephen and the introduction of Saul (later Paul) and how Stephen did what he new was right even when death was looming over him and at that point in Sauls life was holding the coats of those who were to kill him. We asked the question “Am I a Stephen? Willing to do what’s right and needing for God’s glory” or “Am I a Saul, holding the coats of those destroying Christ followers?” Following Christ is not easy, if it were everyone would do it, but back to Max. After I hit max, I turned around to see how bad things were. Max knew he was dying and went into the ditch to die. He made until his owner arrived and called out to him. We’re told that tomorrow isn’t promised, I feel absolutely terrible that I was the one driving on that road at that time. I wish those dogs hadn’t gotten out of their fence. I wish I didn’t have to look someone in the eye and tell them I killed their family pet. I wish I wasn’t messed up. I wish Jesus didn’t have to die for me and you. I wish I had control over anything that happened. I wish people weren’t still getting stoned to death in the world over religion. I wish people would stop following Satan. I …. it doesn’t matter what I wish. It matters what God wishes. As “bad” of a day as it was, God is still in control of everything. Maybe I needed to have a “bad” day, maybe I needed to be ticked off, maybe I needed to not have so much “I” today. Maybe there needed to be more of God today and it wouldn’t have been such a “bad” day after all?

"To Save a Life" movie review

I just walked in the door from seeing, “To Save a Life” http://tosavealifemovie.com/index.php … wow. I absolutely gave this movie 2 thumbs up and would give it 3 if I had them!

This movie goes through the life of a “popular” high school male athlete who’s “best friend” until 9th grade decides to bring a gun to school, fire off a few shots with the last one going into his head. and things start to change.

I cried during this movie … a lot. It was like looking into a mirror from high school and even now as a youth pastor from the character “Chris’s” perspective. This movie hit on many topics that people face today. From drugs, alcohol, community, teen sex and pregnancy, cutting, and suicide. It’s finally a movie with Jesus at the center of it, but not all cheesed out like everything is perfect. This movie is full of “broken” people, some of whom realize they can’t do it alone, some that don’t get the chance.

A much needed reality for everyone to see. I strongly recommend everyone see this movie, even more so if you have a teenager. But don’t just watch it and then say, “oh that was nice.” Go home, go get coffee, just sit in the parking lot and discuss it. We live in a broken and hurting world, this movie may need to be seen twice. Once with you and once with a friend that needs to meet Jesus.

Jesus tells us in John 4:13-14, “…”Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in hom a well of water springing up to eternal life.”” In one hour we’re meeting to bowl. Take this time you have now to drink from the “eternal spring”. 15 hours left without physically eating, let God fill you up.
